This presentation is brought to you by Audubon Everglades!
Date: Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at 7pm
Are you the “right” kind of birder? Melissa never was until – like a red-shouldered hawk harassed by northern mockingbirds – she got fed up with the expectations of what birders should be, how they should act, where they should visit, and how many birds they should see. Instead of fitting in with the flock, Melissa happily flies solo! Join us Tuesday, December 1 for Melissa’s presentation via Zoom. Learn what it means to Be Your Own Birder, including the Universal Truths of birding and all the different ways we can be our own individual types of birders, plus what you don’t need to do to be a birder. In today’s social revolution that elevates different voices and encourages diversity, the best diversity of all is knowing you can be yourself and be a birder at the same time – and so can everyone else.
Melissa Mayntz is an author, writer, and a birder, naturally writing about birds. She has seen hundreds of bird species around the world, witnessed amazing seasonal migrations in stunning destinations, and attracted dozens of species to her central Florida yard. She brings more than 35 years of birding experience to her readers through writing for magazines, blogs, newspapers, newsletters, and her first book – Migration: Exploring the Remarkable Journeys of Birds. Melissa enjoys common birds just as much as rarities, delights in everyday sightings alongside unusual twitches, and has fun visiting captive birds at local zoos and aviaries. Her blank canvas yard is slowly evolving into a wildlife-friendly habitat.
