Weekly Challenge: Cavity Nesters!
Your goal for this week is to find and observe at least two cavity-nesting species in the process of nest building or attendance. Try for one primary and one secondary cavity nester.
Examples of primary cavity nesters: most woodpeckers!!
Examples of secondary cavity nesters: chickadees, nuthatches, House Wrens, Tree Swallows, bluebirds, Great Horned Owls, Wood Ducks, Buffleheads
Not sure where to look? Places with dead or dying trees are great locations for cavity nesters. You might try a spot on the floodplain within the Bitterroot River Important Bird Area. Or venture up into a burned forest- great spots include the Roaring Lion Fire, Cow Creek, or anything burned in 2000.
Please post some pics, eBird checklists, or written observations to the event on our Facebook Page. And happy birding!
Remember, you can also continue previous weeks’ challenges- or maybe combine them?
